Getting a good night’s sleep is essential and so important for our health. Sleep keeps us healthy, at our mental best, and helps us carry good energy through the day.
What do you do when you can’t sleep though? Turn to music. Music has the power to calm you, reduce anxiety, bring you back to the present, and help relax you. Listening to music at the end of the day can be the soothing start to a calm night time routine and set you up for successful night’s sleep.
Music in the wintertime helps us get through this cold season. Creating music in the winter takes heavy sounds, heavy instruments, and slower melodies.
I like to create slower instrumentals featuring deep sounds, with a heaviness about them. This gives a cozier feeling as we try to get through the heaviness of winter.

We are in the middle of summer and music is at full swing.
Music and Summer
Music and summer go hand in hand. The biggest hits are always released during the hot summer months, and there are so many times a song triggers a summertime memory. Songs of the summer are typically upbeat, light, and positive. One could say summertime is the best time to release a new song and really have it hit the charts and become a blockbuster of a song.
Song of the Summer
When hits are released in early summer, they become the song of the summer. When someone thinks about a particular summer, the hit song of the summer might pop into that same memory. Conversely, when you hear an older song that was released during a summer, you might come into a flood of memories just by hearing that summertime song for a few seconds.
The Sound
The sound of the music for a summertime hit is very important. You cannot have a heavy, sad, down sounding song and think that would be good for the hot, sunny days. The song needs to be light, fresh, catchy, motivating, and upbeat to become that year’s summer song. To reach the top of the charts, these qualities are imperative for that summer jam. Without them, the song will get lost and will not be the popular song someone thought it would be.
Long summer days and summer nights are the best time to listen to the perfect summer song. Keep your ears open and listen for the next summer song that will pair with your summer memories this year.

Spring brings a breath of fresh air to this time of year. After getting through several rough winter months, and gloomy, gray weather, it is now time to welcome spring and the newness that it brings. Grass turns green, flowers bloom, and we see new leaves on all of the trees.
Springs brings a sense of excitement, a sense of newness. A way to start fresh and start over. Upbeat music helps achieve this feeling through light, airy music with positive lyrics. Music is so important to get to a mental space where you feel like you can start fresh. Music that has sad lyrics, or an overall feeling of heaviness will not be something one wants to listen to at this time of the year.
Creating Music
Creating music throughout the year is aided by the season you are writing the music for. If you get stuck, just think about the season you want the music to be played in. Spring and summer have similar feels and you can get away with music with similar tempos. Fall and winter are bringing on the colder weather, falling leaves, and snow. Heavier feeling music, with deeper lyrics, and slower tempos are certainly warranted at that time of year.
Enjoy the season, listen to some great music, and get pumped for the summer!

Today on the Rick Vargas Southfield Blog, we look at the change in seasons, namely spring. You can read a synopsis of winter here: https://ricardo-vargas-southfield.com/index.php/2021/01/24/musicandwinter/
Spring is the most anticipated season of the year. If you live in a state that experiences all four seasons, more than likely you are waiting for spring to begin. After a very long four months of winter, we are ready for the spring weather. With spring, it brings a sense of newness and a fresh start after the gloomy, cold winter months.
Fresh Music
At this time of the year, we begin looking for music that gets us excited for the warmer months that summer brings. The anticipation of the excitement of warm weather, long sunny days, and the carefree moments that come with the warmer months all call for upbeat, exciting music. Music that we can dance to, music that you can play on a drive to the beach, and music that you can listen to as you lounge by the pool.
Exciting Times
We all look forward to this time of the year. A time where there is new growth from the ground, new leaves on the trees, and more time to be outside and enjoy life. With all that has been happening in the world today, there is no better time to rejoice in the spring months and play some fresh music as part of our life’s soundtrack.

Today on the Ricardo “Rick” Vargas Southfield blog, I write about music and the winter season. I also write about Music and Seasons here: https://ricardo-vargas-southfield.com/index.php/2020/11/01/music-and-seasons-on-the-ricardo-rick-vargas-southfield-blog/
In the Winter
In the winter, we are surrounded by the cold, frosty blanket of the season. There is nothing we want more than to stay indoors, surrounded by a warm fire. Music comes into play – when you are sitting by a warm fire, more than often you are relaxing and want some calm music to play in the background. Music helps set the mood and warms your soul.
The Snow
When the snow blankets the ground, it may bring with it times of sorrow. There are people who despise the winter season and want nothing more than the summer to be here. The cold and the snow and Seasonal Affective Disorder might cause a person to listen to dark, moody music to get through the days. On the other hand, there are others that thrive in winter sports or may have a job that depends on the snow – this might bring upon cheerful music to get them through practice or their day at work.
The Seasons
Every season brings with it a fresh perspective and it is important to have a soundtrack to go along with that season, no matter how it may make you feel. Music will only help you get through the tough seasons and the good seasons.

The end of every year brings a lot of traditional music. Jingle Bells, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and Auld Lang Syne to name a few. The holidays are synonymous with music. Not only that, but there are radio stations that play holiday music nonstop beginning with the first day of November. We expect music at this time of the year, and it brings along a familiar coziness when the weather gets colder.
Today on the Ricardo “Rick” Vargas Southfield blog, the topic at hand is music and the holidays.
Memories
This approach to music allows it to bring upon memories during those end of year holidays. People gather around a piano while someone plays and sings a traditional Christmas song. One might enjoy drinking a hot cup of cocoa, while sitting in front of the fireplace, while listening to a classical rendition of their favorite Christmas song. These simple acts year over year will produce memories for one to think back to when that song comes on the radio. Music has a special quality when it comes to this.
When music is written, the intent is for it to become catchy enough, or sentimental enough for one to remember the song and associate it with a memory. When these traditional songs were written, no one at the time probably thought they would become longstanding songs associated with holiday tradition. No one ever knows if the song they are writing will become a classic song that needs to be played year over year, or if it might become a song that a professional sports team uses to get everyone excited for a sport.
This is the magic of music and the holidays help one to reflect upon this.

Today on the Ricardo “Rick” Vargas Southfield blog, the topic is being grateful, specifically about music.
Time of the Year
At this time of the year, it is important to think back and reflect on the previous twelve months. People look back at the events that occurred, people they may have met, and memories that were made. It is also important to think back at the things that shaped your life and shaped you. For that reason, we should be very thankful for music.
Why Music?
Music tends to be the soundtrack of our lives. You might hear a song on the radio and think back to a point or event in your life that the song may remind you of. When you think back on the previous twelve months, do songs come to mind? Is there a song that you might think of that takes you back to some memories you made over the summer? Or is there a song you can think of that helped you transition into the fall months?
Being Grateful
Continue to be grateful for all things in your life – this is a given. With that said, be grateful for the music that is composed, the lyrics that are written, and the beats that are produced to continue to provide you with a soundtrack for your life.
